Beth Larson asked:

Having a baby is a wonderful, life changing experience. However, it can leave you feeling overweight and unattractive because of the extra pounds you may have put on while you were pregnant. Chances are you are anxious to find a way to lose that extra weight and get back to your pre-pregnancy shape as quickly as possible.

If you are a new mom and you are ready to lose the weight, the best advice is to take it easy. Trying to lose pregnancy weight too quickly can actually rebound on you. Here are some tips for a healthy way to lose weight after the baby that will get you back to your old self before you know it.

Pregnancy, giving birth and having a new baby to look after are all extremely stressful, hard on your body and can leave you feeling exhausted. Taking care of you new baby requires a lot of energy and chances are you won’t be getting enough rest. That’s why it is so important even if you are not breast feeding that instead of only focusing on losing weight fast, you also focus on giving your body the nutrition and energy that it needs to get through this stressful time.

Once you feel your strength returning and your period has returned to normal then you can start following a healthy diet to lose weight. You shouldn’t lose more than about 1-2 pounds per week and you should be sure to follow a diet that allows you to eat healthy, nutritious foods.

Most women gain anywhere from 25-35 pounds during pregnancy, although your own weight gain may be more or less. During birth, most women lose anywhere from 12-14 pounds. The amount of time that it takes you to lose the remaining weight and get back to your pre-pregnancy body will depend greatly upon how much weight you actually put on.

A fairly safe estimate is that you can lose about 6 lbs. a month after your initial 2-3 month recovery period. Remember, though, every woman’s body is different so this is only a general guideline. Be sure to talk with your doctor about your weight loss plans to find out if they will work with your current health. After all, you want to be a healthy mom for your new little baby!
